The stage has a serious pedigree. Over the years, performers have included Varla Jean Merman, Elvira, Eartha Kitt, Lea DeLaria, Divine, Trixie Mattel and Raja, while recent seasons have continued with popular drag and cabaret acts. Red Room is one of Provincetown’s most intimate spots for drag, cabaret and comedy. Set on Commercial Street, it has a close-up feel that puts the performers almost on top of the audience, with a programme built around camp, live vocals, character comedy and big personalities.

It feels less like a traditional theatre and more like a lively late-night performance room. Depending on the night, the atmosphere can shift from seated cabaret into something much more clubby, with DJs, dancing and a predominantly gay crowd.

Pilgrim House is a boutique inn and entertainment venue on Commercial Street, combining guest rooms with a restaurant, supper club, piano bar and regular live shows under one roof.

Its Supper Club Piano Bar is the heart of the evening scene, with live music several nights a week from local performers and visiting singers and pianists from New York and Los Angeles. Expect Broadway favourites, pop classics, jazz standards and plenty of singalongs, all in an intimate setting where you can order dinner or cocktails while you watch.

The Keyhole is Provincetown’s new hidden speakeasy and cabaret, tucked inside the historic Provincetown Inn. There is no big neon sign announcing it. Instead, you find the unmarked entrance, use the password and step into a small, low-lit room built around live performance, cocktails and a little theatre before the show has even started.

The programme leans into piano-bar sets, jazz, Broadway vocals, comedy, burlesque and cabaret, with the room deliberately kept intimate so the performers feel very close. It is a very different proposition from the bigger Commercial Street venues, more secret club than traditional theatre.

The password gimmick is part of the fun, and reservations are a good idea because seating is limited. If you want a Provincetown night that feels a bit more clandestine, a bit more grown-up and still very gay, this is one of the most interesting new additions to the scene.

Provincetown Theater is the town’s year-round home for proper stage productions, offering something a little different from P-Town’s cabaret and nightlife-heavy venues. The intimate 110-seat theatre focuses on plays, original work and American voices, with a programme designed around bold local storytelling and new writing.

It is a good pick if you want to swap drag and late-night cabaret for an actual night at the theatre. The space has a strong community feel, but the ambition is bigger than local amateur dramatics, with productions, solo work and new plays forming part of its wider performing arts programme.
