Head to Salem, Massachusetts for Haunted Happenings, running October 1 to 31, 2026. What to expect

Haunted Happenings has no single anchor event or venue. Instead, dozens of organizers run overlapping programming throughout October, including haunted attractions, ghost tours, artisan markets, costume events, and live music spread across downtown Salem. 2026 carries extra weight since it lines up with Salem's 400th anniversary, adding historical programming on top of the usual Halloween lineup. Crowds build through the month and peak in the final week, with Halloween night itself the busiest by far, especially with October 31 falling on a Saturday this year.

History and legacy

Haunted Happenings began in 1982, organized by the Salem Chamber of Commerce and the Salem Witch Museum as a way to bring family-friendly programming to visitors drawn to Salem's history and its association with the 1692 witch trials. About 50,000 people attended in its first year, and the festival has grown every season since into the citywide identity Salem now carries into every October.

A note on the LGBTQ+ scene

Salem doesn't have a dedicated LGBTQ+ Halloween scene. It's a welcoming, walkable city with a strong arts community, but travelers looking for LGBTQ+-specific nightlife or programming won't find it built into Haunted Happenings itself.

October is Salem's busiest month by far, and 2026's Saturday Halloween is expected to push demand higher than usual. Early booking matters more here than for most single-day events, both for tickets to individual attractions and for a place to stay, with nearby towns like Beverly, Lynn, or Peabody worth considering if Salem itself is full.
